@vonny,
vonny, Most people use a driver's license for ID. It's complete and has a picture. None of the other so-called IDs is as complete, and none has a picture. I need a valid photo ID to get my taxes done.

Because many people in NYC don't drive, they didn't have valid photo IDs. Hence the nondriver's driver's license. Strange, but it's Noo Yawk. I don't know if such things exist elsewhere.

Remember, Noo Yawk is the place where an egg cream has neither egg nor cream and a Bronx cheer ain't a cheer.

@Roberta,
They have non-driver ID in other states too. To answer Vonny's question about the number of docs required, when I moved to NM I had to register my car and get a state driver's license.

I had my photo drivers license from California, but was also required to show my social security card, birth certificate, 2 utility bills and mortgage or rental docs with my NM address on them to prove I was indeed residing in the state and was a citizen.

Things tightened up after 9/11 and due to recent additional hurdles put in place to make it more difficult for immigrants, legal and otherwise, to settle and assimilate. Also slows the ability to comply with new voter ID laws that require a photo ID.

It sounds like a rather good idea - perhaps we should adopt something like this in the UK!

@vonny,
So many different papers? It's one single ID-card I have show here - we don't have more.

@Roberta,
Most states have them, I think. My mother had one in VT and I know IL has them. She needed one to be able to cash a check in banks and/or stores. And, yes, you get them from the Dept of Motor Vehicles.

I didn't know they were so widespread in the U.S.

I think I have the typical New Yorker mentality, so aptly represented in a New Yorker magazine cover many years ago.

As I mentioned, I needed valid ID so that I could get my taxes done at the IRS--for free. But the IRS is closed. The deadline is tomorrow.

I called the IRS to make sure it was still closed. A new message. Still closed, but the deadline still applies. Nothing about getting taxes done. I had to get the tax forms to the IRS by tomorrow. I had previously scoured the city to find a free tax doer. Only the IRS in the off season.

I found an H & R Block that was still open. Went. Got my taxes done. It cost me almost every cent I had. I had some money from the work I did. Now, bupkis.

The taxes are filed. Not paid, but filed.

Just to prove that when it rains, it pours. While I was getting ready to go out, another tooth fell out. Only a little blood.

I've had better days. Hell, Job had better days.

ETA to add the message: Wowser! when I moved here in '81, all I needed was the current Colorado license. Must have gotten under the wire, and stayed there for the past quarter century. I would not have liked digging out a birth certificate before settling in.

I haven't needed it all my life - and even when I'm dead no-one will really need it.

@Roberta,
It always gets me when they ask you to smile when taking your picture for a diver's license. I always tell 'em to keep it real. I mean, if I have to show my license to some cop who is probably going to give me a ticket, I sure as hell ain't gonna be smiling.

@Lustig Andrei,
Yeah, Andy. They asked me to smile. I said that I can't smile. I'm missing a front tooth. So I semismiled. My mouth looks all crooked.

That's the least of it. The color is not quite there.

Never mind. Who's gonna see the damned thing anyway. It's a nondriver's driver's license. I can't get a ticket, unless it's for jaywalking. And my walking isn't really all that jay.

I look like a delusional terrorist. Bad hair day due to the wind, hadn't trimmed the beard or even given it a brush through so it was unkempt. The entire event was a last minute decision as I was in the area at the time for something else and figgered to dispose of 2 headaches at once.

Also I look darned short. The camera seemed to be coming from some upward angle, frankly I'm surprised they got anything other than the top of my head.

@Sturgis,
I plan to post my photo, once I nab and post it, a day after I was caught trying to get into italy but didn't know it. (my passport expired, what?) Husband's fine.
That was an adventurous first day, when we were asleep walking. I even remember a restaurant. Well, I would.

I took another look. The color ain't there because it's a black and white photo. Embarrassed The last license had a color photo.

I don't look like a terrorist or a murderer. I just look ooky--and colorless.
