Hey, I was in Solvang once. I was visiting a friend in LA. She insisted that we head to Solvang for pastry. The pastry was delicious (not as good as the pastry I had in Copenhagen). What I couldn't figure out and what I viewed as LAish was the two hour schlep for a Danish! A car society.

The town was picturesque in a touristy sort of way. But the scenery there and back was worth the trip--almost.

You were in LA! (smiles)

Time to wend our way to Santa Barbara. Here's a pretty pic -
http://pinker.wjh.harvard.edu/photos/santa_barbara_california/images/Santa%20Barbara%20Riviera.jpg

My ex and I almost bought a house there once, on the outskirts of Hope Ranch. But then our obnoxious neighbor kid with the blasting guitar at all hours moved, thus we stayed where we were.. It had an avocado grove (Farmerman would hate that) and four garages, plus small cottage. Hesitate to guess what that property's worth now. Gulp.

Back with a few of the many places to see in Santa Barbara.

I was almost involved in something happening at the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden - the installaton of a Japanese Teahouse.

Here's a wikipedia photo of a fraction of the garden -
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/57/SBBotanicGarden1.JPG/300px-SBBotanicGarden1.JPG

and here's the story about the teahouse. Nori Hashibe was my first design teacher (design, what's that?) and later friend and mentor.

I was in Santa Barabara too. Liked it there. All that I remember is a gigantamundo fig tree with enormous roots growing on top of the ground. Somewhere in my apartment is a photo of that tree. Here's a photo from the Web.

Oh, yeah, there's a Ficus!!!! wonder which one. Rubiginosa? Macro (micro?) carpa?

In the seventies, my ex and I used to stay at a hotel by the beach, a hotel with a lot of blue roofs, with a train going through the rather large property; it was sort of near the fancy area, the name of which now escapes me.
We loved it....

That landsat image looks rather unbuilt. I figure it was south of town...

A famous place in Santa Barbara back in the 50's - 80's was
The Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions

A garden I've never been to but have sure heard a lot about is Lotusland -
Visual Tour of Lotusland, which is in the Montecito area

Just one of many photos on that Lotusland website -
http://www.lotusland.org/gardens/waterg1.jpg

and... that fancy area the name of which escaped me last evening was... Montecito.

Might be snack time in the Stoatmobile, or is everyone sleepy?

Rest aplenty, as there's more to see....

I think we need a movie (with headphones, of course) -

my favorite movie set in Santa Barbara; indeed one of my favorite movies ever ---

A2K amazon link to Cutter's Way

You gotta see John Heard to believe him.. plus, y'know, that horse scene! The book - can't remember if it was titled Cutter's Way, or Cutter and Bone - was good too.

Well, we'll spend some time in LA and Venice and a few places in Orange County first - but could you take over now for Ventura??

Unless Farmerman wants to talk about the place with the landslides (osso wracks brain, it's just south of Santa Barbara. Summerland might be the name.)

You know Ventura better than I do, CJane.
(I know, like, um, Thousand Oaks, but I don't want to talk about Thousand Oaks)

Then there's Ojai. You can take it, or I will.....

Okay, then let's head for Ventura before osso continues with Los Angeles.

Ventura, nestled between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles is easily
forgotten, however the Stratmobil will stop and take a small tour of
Ventura.
