Attacking an argument by attacking the arguer is invalid. Even if you can prove both your thesis about his faults, and that the poster is also a serial killer, you haven't taken the first step towards disproving his argument. Are you trying to prove his words incorrect or are you just trying to appear to win?

Poster 1: A = B, B = C, therefore A = C.
Poster 2: Do you still beat your wife?

That's a non-sequitur.

No, it's directly on the subject. The whole idea of this thread is that the fact some people who support the war in Iraq haven't been in the army, somehow damages their argument in favor of the war. This is a fundamentally false type of argument.

The difference is, the chickenhawks say, Let's you and him fight to the death." The poster getting criticised is not saying that.

We all fight our own battles. I fight the good fight here every day at A2K. Trying desperately to contain political correctness and liberal, socialist, wanna-be-commies such as yourself. The truth is so obvious, yet you continue to deny that truth and spew your lies. I can't just give it a pass.

Why yes, yes there is:

George Bush seen here presenting the Order of the Flying Chicken (l'Ordre du Poulet Volant), Second Class with grape nut clusters, to George Tenet, for incompetence above and beyond the call of nature. "We will fight the liberal, socialist, wanna-be-commies on the beaches," said Bush afterwards, "we shall fight them in the streets, we shall fight them in the hills, but mostly we'll fight them on the internet from the safety of our own homes. Oh, on second thought, forget that stuff about the beaches and the streets and hills -- I was just funnin' y'all."

"Put up or shut up" is a perfectly reasonable request, IMO.

The idea that stating the demerits of someone disproves his stance on an issue is obviously false. It's just the type of argument advanced by people who, for one reason or another, don't want to actually demonstrate that their theses are correct. Even proving that a poster was a serial killer and a satan worshipper wouldn't show that some position he has on an issue is incorrect. Everyone knows that you can't disprove an argument by proving character flaws in the person who advances it. This is neither more nor less than the cowardly way to advance an argument.
