Word 2010: Creating columns

I am working in Word 2010, and have a single column two pages long of names. 1) I would like to make that two columns. I went to "page layout," then "columns" and clicked on 2 columns - but nothing happened. 2) I have a document that I made a year ago (but not under Word) that has two very mis-aligned columns. How can I use "Columns" to correct this?

@Woollcott,
Did you highlight the existing text before trying to format it into 2 columns? If not, try that so that it doesn't think you want to start formatting the text into 2 columns from the point where your cursor was when you tried to change the format.
