Mother told John, "Don't go to bed without brushing your teeth."

1. Mother told John not to go to bed without brushing his teeth.

2. Mother told John to brush his teeth before going to bed.

Which sentence is correct in reporting the sentence in bold?

I believe the first sentence is correct. However, I think the second sentence is also okay.

You are right.

The first sentence is the correct answer to the question which you have been asked.

The second sentence is grammatically correct, but it does not correctly report the speech of John's mother.
