Lucy completed her assignment with John's help.

1. Without John's help, Lucy could not complete her assignment.

2. Without John's help, Lucy could not have completed her assignment.

In joining the sentences in bold, which is the correct sentence? Is 'could' the correct auxiliary verb?

Thank you very much.

I think "have" is the auxillary verb but I don't see anything wrong with either sentence.
You might want to wait what someone else says since I am not an english expert.
