As my purse was stolen, I couldn't help but feel/felt helpless.

Which word should I use?

Many thanks.

Feel is the appropriate word here.

As my purse was stolen, I felt helpless, is another way that the sentence could have been constructed.

[/B]As my purse was stolen, I couldn't help but (to) feel helpless.

The correct verb is 'feel'. Is it because of the implied 'to'?

Thanks again.
