Anyone knows what this is? English word astonish and astound come from this word. Tonare is to thunder, and prefix as- is ex-. and there are two different explanations for ex-.
One is "out," so extonare is to thunder out. Out is completely, thoroughly. sort of like shouting out. The other explanation is that ex- is out of, from. Therefore extonare is from thunder.

Extonare means to "strike with thunder". (i.e. metaphorically) affect very suddenly and very deeply) Someone who is astonished is sometimes said to be thunderstruck.
