Finally, clicked today.......

Amigo, the word "Zap" came from Vietnam - along with other familiar terms such as "Rock and Roll"......... Zap was a slang term for killing a Vietcong. Rock and Roll was placing your weapon on full automatic.

It wasn't a good time. And, as we are finally seeing today it was all about politics and personal ego.

Be cool, Hugo ~ be cool Very Happy

Those are serious terms, Dan.

Viet Nam was about corporate greed, lies, and deception.

What the era did that was more positive was American citizes who moved the nation forward, toward progression - protests that mattered, a government that listened to its citizens - and an end to the war.

What great lessons will be learned from the current debacle???

Lets see now. Corporate greed, lies, deception....

Thanks for the response and your service in the military.

Stradee,

The truth about Vietnam will never be known - it all started when France arrived in S.E. Asia to exploit industry early in the 1900's. They more or less took over the country - explointing the land and the people. During WWII the French were forced out of the area by the Japanese - after the end of the war - the French returned and took control of Vietnam. After August 1945, Ho Chi Minh resisted the insurgence - China, at the time was involved - but, backed off within a year - which allowed the French to take over the country. Ho, asked the USA to help him. He was denied help. He went to France and lived there awhile - accepting an agreement with the French - at which time unknown to him the French attacked Hanoi and overcame the Chinese. With no assistance, Ho joined the Communist Party and returned to North Vietnam to free the country from the French. In 1954 the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu. The French government asked the USA to help regain the country. That is how we got into the involvement in Vietnam - during the last year of Eisenhower's administration. John F. Kennedy was elected and decided that the USA should pull out of the conflict - (((I believe that is what led to his assination))) Johnson took over the war and accelerated it to years of frustration.
Oh, well, we all know how it ended.

The war in Iraq is WAY more stupid - but, according to Papa Bush's companies creed - "Make as much money out of the war in Iraq as possible"

Duh!!!!

Our government must have hammered **** for brains.

Dan, that's a good synopsis of the Viet Nam war!

The last line of your posts priceless!

For the bullshit flowing out of washington, Americans should be receiving hip boots and deodorizer.

When will we see an end to the Iraq war?

Never

You are welcome anytime, Amigo.

My last post should have been edited as follows =

Back from edit = Stradee, yep, been there, seen it, done those people...... And,
you want to know the truth? I actually made the effort to meet the local people living outside of my protected area. I liked them all. Each person was so nice to meet.
When I left Vietnam, my "hooch maid" - a tiny little grandmother figure - I wanted to give some personal small things to because she had been so great during the past year. She looked sad and said she couldn't take what I offered because the gate guards would take it away from her. So, on my last day in the Nam - I walked with her to the gate - went outside the gate, and gave her my presents to her and her family.

I just read this ^^^ post of Danon's to Setanta. We'd been talking about Vietnam, sorta generally, and sorta specifically.

Set says "best planter's coffee" was in Vietnam, back in the day.

i love Vietnamese coffee, and I usually prefer milder coffees to strong ones, as they tend to be acidic and heavy. Not Vietnamese, that's just pure goodness. I couldn't drink enough of it when I was in Cambodia.

I clucked.

Hi Dag, my fav coffee is Sumatra mixed with Colombian....... approx half and half. Good old S Am coffee taste mixed with what you said - the milder good tasting coffee of SE Asia. That's my usual morning "sipping" sound...... Very Happy
