I was looking for the word 'Family' in Latin but found a couple of results. I found familia (which i thought was spanish), cognatio, and sanguis. I was hoping that someone knew the difference between these three and which one actually means family.

What Wilso said. (I wonder, how cognatio and sanguis were mentioned in what(?) dictionary!)

family = familia (feminine). NB: familia can be either nominative or ablativ
(Sanguis means 'blood', cognatio means relatives > "consanguinity".

The Spanish language has it's roots in Latin, btw.

"familia" -- originally meant a household, everything and everyone under
the power of a "paterfamilias". It wasn't until the Middle Ages that this
term was used to mean "family" in our sense of that word.

"cognatio" -- means persons related, kindred.

"sanguis" -- literally means "blood". It can be used to mean family in the
same sense that it does in English

I think your best choice would be "familia".

Thanks, George: that's why history student not very familiar ( ) with Latin get confused with the term'familia' when it refers e.g. to the slaves in the household.

Beware when a Roman says "Consider yourself part of the familia."
