Does anyone know where this phrase originates? I thought it might be from either the bible or Shakespeare but can't seem to find any links.

Thanks a lot.

It is like many phrases in English, in that its origin is lost in the mists of time. Not every phrase, word, or saying has a documented origin.

Thanks for that contrex. I've discovered that so many things we say come from Shakespeare that I have almost come to expect it.
