"Tensions between the brains and the jocks at Riverside High were heightened when some teachers made divisive remarks suggesting that the jocks were not being penalized for their poor academic records."

I have difficulties with understanding this sentence. Can anyone help?

"Jocks" are those students who excel in sports, and often are not known for their academic prowess. "Brains" are students who are smart, and interested in an education.

In many schools, where sports are emphasized, teachers may overlook academic deficiencies in those students who make a good showing for the school teams. Apparently, the serious students are angry about that.
