"He" phoned a male person (Mr X), a female voice answered, but this presumed woman then said that she, or rather he was Mr X. "He"'s reaction is described in the sentence above.

I understand this as: Though he was surprised, he managed to suppress his astonishment so quickly that he wasn't silent even for a moment.

What do you think?
