At school. "for an hour at the end of the day". I basically know what a "free period" is, but can it happen after classes - I mean, that students stay at school for an hour more though their real lessons are over?

Yes, there could be such a free period. Parents rely upon an assumption that their children will be at the school (and, one assumes, safe) until a certain time of day. Therefore, if the schedule were such that there were no classes for certain children in the last period of the day, then they might be expected to remain on the school grounds, but be given a free period.

Often school-wide, extra-curricular activities--such as a pep rally--are scheduled in the "free" period.

Sometimes student clubs meet then.

If not activities are schedule the "free" period is available as a study hall.
