The grammar here. Is this a real or a hypothetical situation? Which is more probable: "He sometimes played (and then something always happened) or "In this hypothetical situation (just once) he would be playing".
In the first case it would be "He would play", I guess.

I'd use the "would be playing" verb structure in a For Instance situation.

His mother was very possessive. For example, her son would be playing happily with his toys and she would swoop down, scoop him up and insist that he give her a big kiss.

"He would be playing" implies that the scenario happened more than once.
