It means literally, "your ears popped"

Like when you are on an airplane and descending quickly, your ears pop because of the change in pressure

By the way it doesn't mean "pop" like a balloon pops. (Exposion, rupture.) It just means that the pressure changes suddenly and the eardrum snaps quickly, kind of like a rubber band, and you feel/ hear a little "pop"! It doesn't always hurt.

Yeah, apparently it hurts more for some than others.

literarypond, that's why you'll sometimes see people chewing gum when the plane is landing. The movement of their jaw moves the eardrum and helps.

Once I flew into San Diego. The plane came over the mountains and then made this extreme decent to the airport....wow....that hurt.

There was this businessman who apparently made this trip all the time. He sat there with 2 plastic drinking cups held over his ears. He looked ridiculous but I guess it helped.

No sh*t!!!Try telling my mum that!!I try to tell her it hurts like no other pain but she goes, 'just hold your nose, close your mouth and blow!!That just speeds up the unbearable pain!!!She doesnt understand.I can only assume I get it bad.
I was left in a huge spanish supermarket on my own completely disorientated and 90% deaf!!I was not a happy bunny!!

The only thing that works, is sleeping, the next day Im as right as rain.

OK, no physical damage. I'll have to invent something.

Ruptured eardrum is physical damage. Sometimes if a person already has an ear infection, the change in pressure while flying will be enough to cause the rupture.
