Quote:The reason you cannot lose weight by starving yourself (using a low calorie diet) is because your metabolism will detect any major drop in calories and it will then ADJUST ITSELF by burning fewer calories each day.
This statement is essentially correct, but vastly simplified.
The key word here is "major". A normal person's diet fluctuates around a median point. Suppose you need 2000 calories a day to maintain weight.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday you eat 2200 calories. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday you eat 1800 calories. On Sunday you eat 2000 calories.
Through the week you've neither gained nor lost.
Now if you go from 2000 calories a day to 1000 calories a day, your body will go into famine mode. Your metabolism will slow down and you'll burn fewer calories.
Now if you eat only 1750 calories a day for a week, your body thinks all is usual and you'll lose almost a half a pound. If you burn an extra 250 a day, you'll lose about a pound a week.
You didn't put your weight on by eating 3000 calories a day--it crept up on you. You have to lose it the way you gained it--slowly.
