We went to an artisan complex in Sale (across the river from Rabat) where you could see all of the most beautiful hand crafts from around the country.

The complex:

Lamp shop:

Rug shop:

Different styles of rugs denote different regions. The ones that are predominantly red with striped patterns are from Khemisset, the region where Mr. Duck is from. The small red one on the floor between the two platforms is a typical example.

They have these big birds called La Cigone (dont know how theyre called in English) that build their gigantic nests very high up. They love to use cell phone towers and street lamp posts. Ducklet has a theory about the lower double-decker nest in this first picture. She says that the bird had too many eggs so she built a second nest on top of the first one so that the bottom ones would stay warm while she sat on the top ones.

These were built on the tower at the police station. Were not fond of the police there, so we hope they leave poop everywhere.

Wasnt sure I would be able to post this one because it has the Duck familys faces in it, but we managed to block them out. This is the ceiling curtain of stars in Fes that I wrote about earlier.

Would you like Penny to be shipped to you in San Diego or Costa Rica? (Make sure Harry and Fiona are nice to her...!!)

Given the reliability and cost of the delivery options to me in Costa Rica shipping to the U.S. is a good idea.

(When do you need her by?)

I'll be in San Diego August 5-8th. I also have a friend in L.A. right now who returns to Costa Rica on July 24th. Sending Penny to him might get Penny to Vegas and if he brings it to me in Costa Rica I can send it back from San Diego (unless you want me to hang on to it for another 3 months and take Penny somewhere in Latin America).

Otherwise, I have more friends visiting Costa Rica in August and can figure something else out.

Has Ducklet's hair gotten darker, or is my memory betraying me? I remember her kind of blondish from last year.

Yes, her hair has gotten darker. She used to be very very blond but now its a lot closer to brown.

It is sad. People keep asking why we have such blank expressions on our faces.

Yeah, it is interesting, like several time periods colliding in one place. I actually really enjoy staying with Mr. Ducks mom in that town though Mr. Duck doesnt like to stay. I think its depressing for him, but for me its just interesting. And the people are super kind and totally look after each other. Mr. Ducks mom frequently feeds anyone who walks by -- especially on couscous Fridays. But yeah, things arent so predictable and reliable as they are here.

Laughing Yes, I cant post those.

Though there was one amusing incident with a very conservative uncle who was called The Wizard of Oz by Ducklet.

I think South America and Antarctica are the only ones.

Sozobe, does Penny already have plans for the first week of September? I'll be flying to Germany then. If I could get her by August the 29th or earlier, maybe I could take her to Munich and Heidelberg with me.

Awesome photos, FreeDuck.

That is one of the places on the top of my list of those I"ve always wanted to visit.

And just think, Penny didn't need to get any shots!

So, in Penny's journal for sozlet I wrote about women carrying babies on their backs. I wanted to post a picture of that and this was the best one I could find. There are actually babies on both of these women's backs.

I think I also wrote about the roads in Morocco in Penny's journal. Though there has been a lot of work to build safe, fast, and well-connected highways in the last 10 years or so, a lot of the old roads still look like the picture below. They are not quite large enough to support two-way traffic (though they do) and they are often shared with animals, people walking, horse and donkey pulled carts, people riding on donkeys, etc... It is common for entire herds of sheep or goats to cross in front of you.
