My pal, the heir to most of the vegetables in inland Nebraska, has become a superb amateur oceanographer. The marine studies people invite him to Wood's Hole each year. He has a wave named for him.
here, i couldn't understand "the heir to most of the vegetables in inland Nebraska"
can the vegetables be inherited??
Possibility:
The subject is heir to a large vegetable business.
Or his family owns a good bit of farmland.
Nebraska is a state located in the Great Plains, far from any ocean. It is noted for its agricultural production, and conjures up visions of "waves of grain" - like an ocean - stretching to the horizons. The pal is a wealthy heir of farmland in that state.
