LOS ANGELES (AP) - Hispanic and other civil rights groups wrapped up plans for immigration reform marches and rallies Tuesday in dozens of cities, but conceded that a replay of last year's huge turnout was unlikely.

Still, organizers said the demonstrations reflect a robust movement determined to win a path to citizenship for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country.

As long as they are legal and peaceful, they can rally all they want, but this part bothers me...

In Florida, voter registration drives and vigils were planned in Miami, Tampa, Orlando and West Palm Beach, along with after-hours rallies in agricultural towns in the Everglades

Who are they gonna register to vote?
If you arent a US citizen, you cannot vote.
Are they gonna try and register illegals?
Or just citizens?
Are they gonna ask for proof of citizenship before they register someone?

Protesters press for path to citizenship
AP - LOS ANGELES - Demonstrators demanding a path to citizenship for an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants hope that nationwide marches on Tuesday will spur Congress to act before the looming presidential primaries take over the political landscape.

Obviously, we are registering US citizens.

From my experience, a significant proportion, perhaps more than half (although there is no way to tell) of people who attend these marches are US citizens.

Many of US citizens at these rallies are progressive Americans (like myself). Others are citizens who have friends or family they care about. Others come because they are upset by what they feel is racism from the anti-"illegal"-immigrant crowd. There are a lot of US citizens of Hispanic descent who come to support their communities.

People who are politically active progressives are already registered.

These voter drives to make sure the other folks are registered. US citizens who want to help undocumented family members, or citizens who are mad enough or concerned enough to come out for a rally sometimes haven't taken the time or understood the importance of registering.

according to our local abc, channel 7, after pushing back the start time by over an hour, the first march began at 11 am here.

with only about 3000 people. roughly 400-450 of whom were kids that bailed on class.

the afternoon rally may be bigger, but organizers are reported to have said that numbers were expected to be about the same.

If you arent asking people if they are US citizens, then how do you know you are only registering citizens?

Loyalty Day, 2007
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

White House News

America was founded by patriots who risked their lives to bring freedom to our Nation. Today, our citizens are grateful for our Founding Fathers and confident in the principles that lead us forward. On Loyalty Day, we celebrate the blessings of freedom and remember our responsibility to continue our legacy of liberty.

Our Nation has never been united simply by blood, birth, or soil, but instead has always been united by the ideals that move us beyond our background and teach us what it means to be Americans. We believe deeply in freedom and self-government, values embodied in our cherished documents and defended by our troops over the course of generations. Our citizens hold the truths of our founding close to their hearts and demonstrate their loyalty in countless ways. We are inspired by the patriotic service of the men and women who wear our Nation's uniform with honor and decency. The military spouses and families who stand by their loved ones represent the best of the American spirit, and we are profoundly grateful for their sacrifice. Our country is strengthened by the millions of volunteers who show deep compassion toward their neighbors in need. All citizens can express their loyalty to the United States by flying the flag, participating in our democracy, and learning more about our country's grand story of courage and simple dream of dignity.

The Congress, by Public Law 85-529, as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day." This Loyalty Day, and throughout the year, I ask all Americans to join me in reaffirming our allegiance to our Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2007, as Loyalty Day. I call upon the people of the United States to participate in this national observance and to display the flag of the United States on Loyalty Day as a symbol of pride in our Nation.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-first.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Now,I know that you on the left will immediately attack Bush for this,so let me enlighten you now...

And just to show that it isnt just Bush making the proclamation, here is one of Bill Clintons proclamation about the same day...

I have never been much for empty patriotic displays... especially the type that tends to stop people from thinking for themselves...

But maybe the acts of participating in a political demonstration on an issue that affects your comunity and registering to vote provided you are a US citizen are are ways to express this kind of "loyalty" to America that you and I could agree on.

What you don't understand, my dear bear, is that many (if not most) of the people marching, including yours truly, are American citizens.

This debate is not American citizens against "illegals". If it were, wou would be able to round people up and through them out... just as you suggest.

There are millions of us American Citizens who care that immigrants, whether here legally or not, are treated with dignity and respect-- and are given a path to citizenship.

Americans like me are fighting for the rights of these "illegal immigrants" because we believe that diversity is good for America and that compassion is more important than "law and order".

So given that so many American citizens are part of these marches, how are police going to "round them up" without violating due process rights.

They can't because we American citizens who care won't let them.

Illegal is nothing new for the progressive left Bear.

We have protected the rights of all kinds of illegals from homosexuals to interracial couples. We have helped women get safe illegal abortions. We harbored people who burned draft cards. We rode on buses illegally as freedom riders and eaten in restaurants.

So now us lefties are against the war on drugs and immigration enforcement- and the "law'n order" people are up in arms.

But it's really the same old stuff.

I have a question. If you allow someone to come into this country illegally how does that show respect for any of our laws by immigrants. If your a citizen you can fight against laws you disagree with legally. Wether you agree or not we have a problem with immigrants who break our laws and flee to Mexico. Try to get them back across the border with or without Mexico's help. If they ask for citizenship that shows they are interested in making this country their permanent home.

Illegal immigrants and their legal friends and progeny marching to protest what? Enforcement of our laws? I am happy to march to advance enforcement of our laws. I heard one protester, in tears, explain that her illegal immigrant uncles and cousins are not animals, they are human beings.

Classic mindless liberal rhetoric.

Of course they are human beings. They are human beings breaking the law of a nation that prides itself as being ruled by LAW!

If your Uncle Jose or Cousin Maria breaks a law, it matters little as to their origins or your politics.
