I just want to say welcome to you, newsn01. Very Happy

I don't have a need of assistance with Mandarin myself, but perhaps others here might.

But feel free to talk about anything else that interests you, too!

I have been studying Mandarin through pinyin (transliteration of Mandarin using the Western alphabet rather than traditional characters). In what situations would you use pinyin rather than traditional characters, newsn01?

In fact,we dont use traitional characters anymore in most areas of China,
In China,there are only the areas below use traditional characters:Taiwan,
Hongkong,and macao.
I come from the main land,so use Simple Chinese,and Pinyin is just a method to type into Characters by keyborad,in my opinion,In fact,in China,there area some many methods to type into Characters into computer besides PinYin...........if u like,i can give u some more infomations

I know that there is software that converts Pinyin (Mandarin words expressed in the Western Alphabet) directly into simplified Chinese characters. Do Chinese speakers also communicate by directly using the pinyin Western spellings?

For example: typing "ni hao" without converting this to simplified characters?

i m a chinese
i m sorry to say that the chinese seldom to communicate with each other typing pinyin,for:
1.chinese characters have tones which is hard to present just by letters;
2.too many chinese characters have a same pronounciation even if they have been distinguished with tones but maybe still have totally different writing form;
3.chinese characters is less data-processing than letters,esp. when a chinese text is writen in ancient chinese which is still sometimes used in modern chinese as some certain usage.

Thank you for the information, newsn01. I had often wondered whether pinyin is used directly.
