It really is just what the name implies. it is a saw that is attached to a pole and you use it to trim tree branches and limbs. The old ones were simply a saw blade on the end of a wooden pole that was 10 to 12 feet long. They later used an aluminum pole that could be telescoped out to make it longer ( and it was much lighter than the wooden ones). I guess now they have saws with electric or gas motors. Hope this helps.
