Why is Prozac considered to be a neuroleptic drug?

Prozac?
I don't know myself. I thought that neuroleptics were used for the treatment of psychosis and not depression. Prozac is usually used for treating depression. Rolling Eyes

According to psy.web, "Neuroleptic drugs are used to reduce the intensity and frequency of psychotic symptoms."- Therefore, anti depressives are not in this category!

Neuroleptics
I noticed on a google answer, that prozac was referred to as a neuroleptic drug. That answer couldn't be right, because, as Phoenix has pointed out, neuroleptics are used for psychotics and depression is NOT a psychosis.

New Haven- Well, mood disorders are a bit complicated. In severely deptessed individuals, there may be auditory hallucinations, and even catatonia. The hallucinations usually relate to the depressive mood.

New Haven,
Major Depression CAN be a psychosis.
It may be mood-incongruent, too, as thought insertion, delusions of control, thought broadcasting, etc.
It is not ALWAYS related to the depressed mood.

Jeanbean- Sometimes it is difficult to determine if a person is depressed with psychotic features, or has a schizo-affective disorder.

I remember a professor once jokingly telling her class that if a person is middle class, he is characteristically diagnosed with depression. A lower or working class person would more likely receive a schizophrenic diagnosis.

If the person is wealthy, especially if he is in show business, the preferred diagnosis is "exhaustion"! Laughing

Schizophrenia vs depression?

Psychotics can be depressed, but depression is not their major mental health ailment. Idea

Its not really, but as atypical Neuroleptic drugs also act on serotonin receptors (particulrly 5HT2A,C and 5HT1A) , as well as D2 neuroreceptors, so it could be sort of thought to be related to neuroleptic drugs as an SSRI.

hope that helps. Pixie
