Point of view from person that has 10+ years experience.
I originally started taking deprovera, not long after it was apprehensively
introduced. I started taking it because I am one of those people that cannot remember to take something everyday, but for some bizarre reason, can remember an appointment every three months.

I have had only one side effect, a small amount of spotting every month for the first few years. Now I don't have a period at all.

Everyone is not the same and people have different reactions to different
things. I really like the depo shot and I have no problems with it.
I am also lucky to have had the same doctor that monitors my progress consistently and confirms that so far I am doing fine.

I believe that a decision should be made based on a discussion between a
woman (their partner if applicable) and a medical professional. Unfortunately, not all medical professionals have the same knowledge,
so we also need to pay attention to what our bodies are trying to tell us.

Also, today there are many other options out there for women to explore!

I plan on going back on it now that I've had my baby! Smile

99% of the people complaining on here came online to find a place to vent about their side effects. The percentage of people who have a terrible experience of it is not remotely large enough to create a concern for me to stop ...or any of the doctors I've talked to.

So does everyone realize that they've now found that being on the shot for more than two years reduces your bone density?

I know we're supposed to provide links to info about this stuff, but sorry, I'm not going to, it's easy to find out about it from your doctor or just google it. Smile This is what my doctor and two nurses that I'm friends with told me. It isn't one of those goofy rumors; I was told that reputable doctors now tell their patients to stop after two years. But I'm sure there are people who won't be told, so I just wanted to let y'all know...please, ask your doc about this if you're been on it for a long time.

The shot depletes your bones of calcium. I was told at 24-49 a person should have atleast 1000 milligrams of calciuim a day. I was told to take supplements, and increase the calcium in my diet by eating more dairy products.

Sadly, what few people know is that getting your calcium from dairy is not effective because animal proteins block our bodies from absorbing calcium. Calcium is better obtained from broccoli, kale, bok choy, blackberries, raspberries, collard greens, soymilk, or supplements because it's fully absorbable in these forms.

It's been found in numerous studies (including one done by the National Dairy Council!) that the countries with the highest dairy consumption (US, Sweden, etc) also have the highest rates of osteoporosis by far. So don't bank on dairy to help your bones.

I'm not goign to go into great details.. nor have I read the entierity ofthe thread.. but one of my closest friends was on Depro and it.. did very not nice things to her. deep depression (doubing the marriage she lives for, isolating herself from him etc).. . NO sex drive at all, her vision degraded quite suddenly (then stopped, near as I know). She'd had two back injuries from unrelated things (torn muscles) before.. but they healed up well enough. After depro, she started having even mor eback problems and often can't sleep at night because of the pain and her "natural" restlessness. Not to mention drastic weight gain. Perhaps related or perhaps not, jbut she also developed, very suddenly, terrible asthema and allergies, where before she'd had none at all ever.

Please please please be careful with this drug.. . jsut because side effects happen in /some/ doesn't mean they won't happen to you.

I spoke with my doctor thoroughly before finally deciding to go on the DEPO, as i think everyone should.
There are side affects to every drug that can be taken. Some people get them some don't.
I had tried the pill before and got pregnant. so they put me on a higher dose and guess what, i got pregnant again.
So i was 21 with two kids under 2 and i wasn't about to let this happen again. I was considering the IMPLANON contraceptive but a friend became pregnant on it. I opted for the DEPO shot and for me personally it has been the best choice that i made.
I had no period, the little pimples that i had disappeared, my mood wasn't as bad as it used to be and i think that it has helped me to lose weight. after my second baby i wieghed about 85kgs. Now i weigh about 74kgs. My only exercise is doing the housework and running around after the kids. I think that it has actually surpressed my eating as i don't eat so much anymore.

New to depo..
I've noticed alot of people bashing the depo shot.... i wouldn't know much about it as of yet except that my doc, the one who gave it to me, is on it herself, i was warned of increased appitite but seeing as how at this time i have no appitie (i normally only eat once every other day, not by chioce of course, just i look at food and want nothing to do with it, i have to force myself to eat normally!!) i figured that side effect could be more helpful than harmful, also, being as how i am on ssi and have to live off only 826 bucks a month, i figured that if i am one of the lucky ones who ends up with no period at all then it'll also save me money (my medi-cal covers the cost of my shots)

i just gave birth on may 9th (beautiful baby girl!!) and due to my low income i had to give her up for adoption, i don't want to go through that again, it's the hardest thing i've ever done in my life..... so i guess for some people the risks are well worth taking..... though i am still curious as to what to expect....

<just as a by the by, it's Depo-Provera, a Trade name for Medroxyprogesterone, which is a steroid derivative of progesterone, a naturally occuring female hormone>

My girlfriend has been on it for almost a year. For the first couple of weeks she was bothered by some outbreaks of acne (she's in her 30's) and some joint aches. But ever since, its been smooth sailing. You just have to be aware of possible side effects like it can throw off your period or stop it completely, and it can trigger early premenopausal symptoms.

If you change your mind and want to have a youngun', make sure you are off the stuff for at least 3-4 months before you can expect to gestate again.

Periods after deprovera
I had been on deprovera for a good few years. I had my last injection in April 2005 and I still haven't had a period. Does anybody else have this problem or any advice?

It's not an unheard of side effect - it makes some women start menopause earlier than they would've. Are you in your 40's?

Re: Periods after deprovera
I was 40 last December and was tested to see if I was starting the menopause and I wasn't. The doctors just say to keep waiting but even I think 13 months is a bit long.

Depo-osteoporosis
Hello,
This is my first time posting. I was reading some of the other posts on here about depo and decrease in bone mass. Well, I was on Depo for 5 years. My last injection was in Feb '06. My Dr. recommended I have a Bone Density Scan. So, I went and it revealed that I have SEVERE Osteoporosis!!! My Doctor was shocked at the results and sent me for a second test and it again showed the same thing!! I am only 23 years old. I thought Depo was the greatest thing in the world, After my 2nd shot I never had a period. My doctor has been consulting with bone specialists and has ran numerous tests on me, they conclude that I may be genetically predisposed to have osteoporosis but that Depo greatly increased my risk.

Depo-osteoporosis
What symptoms did you have that made the doctors recommend a bone density scan at your age?

blame your doctor because that's one of the massivest warnings against depo is not to take it if you are genetically predispoded to osteoprosis.

i drink soy like a mad man, so theoreticly, i'm safe hehe Cool

(my doctor suggested to up my calcium intake since my first shot)
