Spike in Violent Crime in US

The authors of Freakonomics had an unexpected reason for an unexpected drop in crime when it should be spiking (Roe v. Wade - 1973).

While there are many apparent contributing reasons: gangs, continuing breakdown of family, media, continuing loss of respect for 'traditional values,' etc., all of which share part of the problem, I wonder what their read on this would be.
