Of course. Refuting parents is a time-honored rite of passage.

I brought in the mail and noticed a letter for Nigel. It's from the MIT Office of
Admissions and very thin. Oh well. I'm proud of him for applying
there, but it probably wouldn't have been a very good match. He'll be
disappointed, though.

At least he has his Guaranteed Destination.

Rejection will still be hard.

Seems several others from his school who applied to the Tech were also
rejected -- including the valedictorian. Hermione claims that MIT is harder
on private schoolers than on public schoolers (she graduated from Stoneham
HS). Don't know whether that's true.

At any rate, he admits that he probably would not have gone there. I don't
think he wants to go on in the sciences. He does well in math and science,
but -- unlike his sister -- it's not his passion.

He is his usual goofy self now, putting up this poster in his room:

Sometimes peer groups are very comforting.

Like ours, for example.
Thanks for the comforting, Noddy.

You're a sweet-talking man. My mamma warned me about men like you.

That is so true. When you can look around and see so much outstanding talent being rejected, along with your own, then it ain't so bad. Ol' stinky MIT. He didn't really want to go there anyway.

Nigel's been taking it on the chin. He got two more rejections, one from
his "dream school." He knew it was a reach and I encouraged him to
take the chance. He's not showing any emotion about it. The old shrug
and "It's OK". Only one more outstanding. I'll be glad when this is over.

The other day, he got a call from McGill. It was a student who wanted to
talk with him and answer any questions abou McGill he might have.

McGill is a school with some savvy about wooing and charming their A-List students.

Well, the last school wait-listed him.
The decision is McGill.
I'm ecstatic!

...and on another front, he finally asked someone to the prom!
One of the girls from the Dana Hall (a girl's school that partners with
all-boys St. John's Prep for fencing) foil squad.
