I just did the math and I think I was wrong about the pace being cumulative.
They're probably calculating it along a sliding window of 2 or 3 miles.

I thought I did the math, and I got 10.9. Well, I never was a math star.

Seems like being slow-ish in the middle and then speeding up towards the end would make sense...?

I looked for what pace he was going for, I found one race where his pace was 10.12/ mile, his "fastest ever," I'd imagine he'd want to go slower than that? Couldn't find his goal pace for the marathon though.

Go Joe go Joe go Joe!!

And thanks muchly for the updates, RJB!

revision, I think my 10.96 is equal to 10 minutes 57 seconds, more or less.
So, I'll say cumulative. Waves hand, don't listen to me.

No, I think you're right.
My math stinks.

More than half-way.
This is the tough part.

Yeah, so far it hasn't been tough at all... what's a measly 15 miles?

Shocked

(I take your meaning though.)

(25 kilometers is 15 miles, right?)

He's been running for 3 hours... wow...

He'd want to go a LOT slower than that.
But there's something about the excitement of being in the race that makes
you go out faster than you should.
For most runners, the end (at about mile 20 or so) is where you "hit the wall".
At that point it's about keeping one foot in front of the other -- at any speed.

That makes sense. (You're talking to a sprinter here, I'd start out fast and go fast until I was done.)

So the slowing pace isn't too worrisome? More like he came out too fast and then settled down into something more reasonable?

Well this is the tough part mentally.
You get half way and you either think "Hey, I'm already half way" or "Cripes,
I'm only half-way." It has an effect on the way you run the next quarter of
the race. The temptation to quit can be very strong at this point.

But Joe ain't a quitter.

I think so. He's got very good stamina. I thought he was way undertrained
for his first half marathon, but he did fine.

Yeah, I knew what you meant about the mental part, and agree.

Thanks for your take on the pace, that's encouraging.

GO JOE!!

So 18 miles down and about 8 to go, right?

Trying to remember the name of a runner in the eighties in LA, a woman, who ran hell bent for leather and didn't make it to the end, and did that repeatedly, LA marathon after LA marathon.

I'm not worried by JoeN's pace but I don't know anything. He may be running into clumps of people, whatever. I'd rather have him conserve..
