dana, You need to determine what's causing the allergy. It may not be the gold but what's mixed with the gold. My aunt couldn't wear 14K or 18K gold earrings. Only 24K.

If it does turn out to be the gold, then I'm guessing you're going to to switch to earrings that aren't for pierced ears. A major adjustment.

But first I suggest that you find out for sure what you're reacting to.

I bet it's a nickel allergy. Have you noticed any symptoms beyond just the issues with your earlobes? As in, do you have itching on the sides of your fingers or the bottoms of your feet? Do you have any reactions to nickel coming into any other contact with your skin, e. g. the zipper on a pair of blue jeans?

(It's not a phantom allergy caused by the desire to upgrade )

I'm rather sure, there are only very few (=handful if at all) people with gold allergies.
But you never know ...

I think my mum can only wear gold jewellery due to sensitive skin.
Alternatibely she wears hypo-allergenic metal jewellery.
