As I said above, it's Abert of Saxon[Sachsen]-Coburg-Gotha.

This dukedom belong to the so-called Thuringian states [Thürigische Staaten]:

Amazing how many separate states there were and are.

(I thought when you first mentioned the "A" that maybe you meant the letter, itself.)

Walter, that was a pretty map, sort of minimalist as maps go, except for the long state names...

Gosh, what a super thread!!! So many interesting responses and super pix! My thanks to everyone, too. I'm glad I saw the NY Times article on the Cotswolds with the picture. Like a different world, isn't it? Fairyland, yes! Glad you all liked it. And, you're welcome. [/color] Smile

Some -perhaps- nice and useful reading, to shorten the days until you'll arrive there:

Thanks for the reminder, Charli!

You're right, the contributions of all the people here have been great! Lots of fun to read what so many knowledgable UK visitors have to say.

Thanks, everybody!!! Laughing

Walter, you have been the champion at finding good links! Who would have thought there'd be such a wealth of music in & around Skye? I hope that we'll be able to hear some local music when we're staying on Loch Alsh. They said there's a pub that has impromptu cèilidhs nearby. Did you notice this picture from that website? It's one of the reasons I love the Highlands... layers and layers of hills reflected in the water.
