The one time I've been to the Borgata in Atlantic City, they had at least 20 1/2/no-limit tables. With free drinks, etc., I can't image the casino made enough money off of that to pay anything more than overhead. Probably they're hoping to eventually draw the players to higher stakes tables.

The casino (and the dealers) make gobs of money. A 1-2 table should be doing over $100 an hour in rake and the dealers should average over $30 an hour in tips.

I can see the freedom and non nine to five as a huge attraction, but what else?

Most players I run into who find out what I do say I'm "living the dream" and for most I think it has a lot to do with being able to do something for a living that they enjoy (people who play poker tend to like to do so an awful lot) doing for entertainment.

What they don't usually understand is that doing it for work makes it work. Poker is boring as hell to me most days and I'd rather not play. The appeal is in that I can go anywhere I want and make a living. It's just a means to an end and the end for me is freedom.

Now...THAT I understand....the if it's work it's work part. (I wonder if that is ever not true....?)

Freedom...in what sense? Financial? Being your own boss? (I get the travel bit....going wherever you want...but nurses, and even, in a more limited way, I, for example, can pretty much do that...but is it more?)

I decided to waste some money on a World Series tournament ($1500 6-handed Holdem) today. I am up a wee bit and we're on the first break (I'm posting from my phone). Wish me luck, in a tournament this size you need it.

Best of Luck! Remember the key difference in tourney play is survive, survive and survive!

Well sure. He doesn't just work where he wants; he works when he wants and if he wants as well. He can change hours and locations as often as he wishes, and blow off "work", at will, without repercussions or guilt. Few professions allow you that much freedom.

No boss.

Which can cut both ways. I'm waaaaaay too lazy to be my own boss, and even cards (and damn it I do love cards) would get stale after a while. Especially with all that airport-bar-like stress that hangs over a poker table...

I guess for poker at least you don't need all that infrastructure to pay for and maintain!

Good luck Craven....

Is that profit, or does it include your float?

Okay, found it. Deb the $13,900 isn't real money. In a WPT tourney everyone starts with the same amount of chips (3,000), and they play until one person wins them ALL. Players are paid based on how long they last. I'm guessing by Craven's description; turning 3000 into 13900 is probably keeping up with the average in the field. (Average among those who haven't already been knocked out that is; since 3000 is obviously the overall average).

Apparently; he has to kick ass for 3 days to win. Kick that ass (or at least survive for now) Craven!

The three-days-straight insomniac in me finds that idea very appealing. Three days of tense boredom punctuated by moments of high drama.

Me likey.

Makes me wonder what my old college drinking "buddy" C is doing now. He used to pay his rent by making one or two little road trips to California card rooms a month. There was definitely something wrong with this guy, but he always looked like he was on the verge of passing out. I'm guessing bleary and squinty was his poker face. Must've been a damn good one, because he never missed rent.

Laughing They don't play 24/7. I do wish he'd give us an update. Hope you're doing well Craven!

If Craven it still around; he's close to success:

Not necessarily. If he's still in; he's already guaranteed to double his money. Only 62 players left out of a field of 1427, though... so that's a pretty BIG IF. More likely; he stayed up all night beating down donkey's that shouldn't be there in the first place. Still, my fingers are crossed.

It's a bit of it all. I could be my own boss in a number of different ways (and have been more often than not in my careers) but this particular way involves a bit more freedom.

First of all, time is less of a factor. I can work anytime of the day any day of the week and so on.

Secondly, I don't work with anyone, so I don't need to worry about being available for anyone else's schedule, I don't need to maintain any work relationships and I could literally be in a new country tomorrow and pick up my work right where I left off. While nurses are in great demand (I know, I still consult for a travel nursing agency) they can't just pick up on a whim in the middle of the night and work the next day in a new city.
