How are the words "obtain" and "attain" different?

Hi, ih, and welcome to A2K. I would suggest that the major difference in the two words has to do with their use.

i.e. We obtain something concrete, but attain something abstract.

He attains his goals through use of his imagination.

He obtained a degree from the university.

I believe Letty has made the proper distinction. In some cases, both words seem to fit. For instance, a degree is both something physical and abstract, and both attain and obtain sound right

Thanks. You both were very helpful. I'm trying to discern the difference as used in the Bible in Romans 9:30.
