can anybody explain why 'guide' can not be the answer in the following question?

Q: These basic principles provide general ____that can help students increase their chances for a successful application with any company.

It would need an "a" in front of "general". Then you could use it.

A "guide" is a person or document of some sort that provides information. "Guidance" is the information being presented.

In your statement, the document containing the basic principles is the guide and a guide can't provide a guide. A guide provides guidance.
