Hi everyone,

I'm 18 years old, and for most of my life that I can remember, I've had a dry cough, but over the past 2-3 years, now it's like I always have someting in my throat. I'm always having to clear my throat or cough.

I'm only now noticing that certain foods make it worse. Is this a symptom of food allergies. Can anyone pls. give me any info on food allergies?

Thank you very much Very Happy

I am not a medical practicioner however your symptoms sound a little like juvenile asthma which my daughter suffered from.

Have you seen a medical practicioner in regard to these symtoms?

Other possible causes could be reactions to animal hair, mould spores or pollens. With pollens and mould I would expect the reaction to be seasonal.

I think the reaction to certain foods is probably a case of the foods making the condition worse rather than being the underlying cause.

What type of foodstuffs do you believe make the condition worse?

Hi ginguh and welcome to a2k. I have many allergies. I think that you need to see a doctor to be tested to determine the cause of the coughing. It could be allergies, and, as dadpad said, it could be asthma.

I'm not a doctor. My own experience has been that milk and milk products (cheese, cream, butter) increase phlegm and make me need to clear my throat.

The only way for you to be sure is to be checked and tested by a doctor.

Hi, thanks for the welcome Smile.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I did see a doctor about it in August, when I moved to a different country and my cough got worse.
She diagnosed it as allergic cough and prescribed me some medication, that didn't actually do anything :\.

I am living in a third world country, that is rather polluted, so that may be a contributing factor.

Foods that I've noticed aggravate it so far are mangos, foods containing hydrogenated oils, cold things like ice cream. Basically I think a lot of junk foods...

Anyway, I appreciate any thoughts on the matter. I'm not seeking medical advice, just wondering if people have similar experiences. I think I will have to go to a doctor again about it.

Hi Ginguh, Thanks for the additional information. I'm glad that you've already seen a doctor for the cough. Sometimes allergy medicines have to be changed until you find one that works for you. Maybe that's the case here. I suspect that you're right about the pollution making the cough worse. (When I first started taking medicine for allergies, my doctor tried three different medicines until we found one that helped.)

I honestly can't answer your question about the foods. You may be allergic to the foods you mention, or these foods may just contribute to your coughing for different reasons. The only way to be sure about food allergies is to be tested by a doctor. Maybe until you can be tested, you can just avoid the kinds of foods you mention and see if it helps.

I hope you feel better.
