BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein could be hanged within hours, a senior Iraqi source told Reuters on Friday after Saddam's lawyer said U.S. forces had handed over the former president to Iraqi authorities for execution.

U.S. officials, however, insisted that the 69-year-old ousted dictator was still in American hands.

And a leading politician said Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was waiting for a religious ruling on whether Saturday's start of the Eid al-Adha holiday, coinciding with the haj pilgrimage to Mecca, meant the execution should be postponed for a week.

An appeals court on Tuesday upheld Saddam's November 5 death sentence for the killings, torture and other crimes against the Shi'ite population of the town of Dujail.

After a day of conflicting signals, during which the Justice Ministry had said it could legally do nothing for a month, the senior Iraqi source said debate over whether a presidential decree was needed to override that was over.

Wire reports now are that the Iraqi government has officially announced physical custody of Saddam has been handed over to Iraqi authority, CNN, FOX, and MSNBC all confirming.

Officially the key word. Just like Saddam won't be officially dead until hours after he actually is.

Does anyone here pay attention to reality?

Accounts of "Who's got Saddam" continue to conflict, with both wire services and broadcast media going back-and-forth on the question - however it should be borne in mind that defining his custody as "under US control" very likely means little beyond that the guards currently closest to him are US military, and that paperwork is in process.

I really don't anticipate uncertainty long will pertain.

Members of Iraq's parliament and families of Saddam Hussein's victims will witness the former leader's execution, planned to take place no later than Saturday.

American and Iraqi officials said Saddam was still in the hands of American guards. The physical transfer of the former dictator to Iraqi authorities is one of the last steps before his hanging.

"There has been no change in his status," said Tom Casey, the US State Department's deputy spokesman. He said US Embassy officials in Baghdad told him that Saddam remained in American hands.

A senior Iraqi government official said a meeting is being held between officials from Iraqi prime minister Nouri Maliki's office and US officials to set a time for the execution.

Iraqi officials were gathered at an undisclosed location in the Green Zone, awaiting the arrival of US officials to set a time for the execution, the same official said.

They will then travel together to another unspecified place where Saddam would be executed, he said.

Mr Maliki has signed Saddam's death sentence, the same senior Iraqi official said.

"We have agreed with the Americans that the handover will take place only a few minutes before he is executed," the official said.

Saddam's lawyers issued a statement on Friday calling on "everybody to do everything to stop this unfair execution."

Maliki said opposing Saddam's execution was an insult to his victims. His office said he made the remarks in a meeting with families of people who died during Saddam's rule.

Rather ironic to be flipping channels between services for President Ford and news updates about the status of Saddam's death sentence.

Seems that talks between PM Nuri al-Maliki and US officials are finished - several correspondants now say, it well happen within the next hours.

Indeed - at any event, while it appears that Ford is still dead with no prospect of change, Saddam apparently is not yet dead but there is little prospect that will not change in the relatively near future.

The part here which still perplexs me most of course is all you lilly livered liberals who constantly prance around screaming of how wrong the death penalty is. But wait! There's more!

You say we should never have gone into Iraq...okay. Well, if we didn't go into Iraq then Saddam might still be in charge and if that was the case there would be no possibility of execution. What on earth would you folks do then to get your happies?

Choose carefully what you supposedly want folks because if you support the execution of Hussein then you are actually indicating that you support the incursion into Iraq.

Well, don't just stand there with your mouths HanGing open...you knew at some point this truth would be presented to you.

Reread the thread, Sturgis. Most of it is arguing over which media outlet has the best rumor reported as factual truth.

I don't see anyone talking about how wrong the death penalty is except the Pope in that article I posted.

I do see us talking about that other lilly livered liberal known as President Ford. You know the one, he's the one that thought the justification for the invasion was a mistake.

Are you sure you aren't wearing someone elses spectacles? Your view seems to be distorted.

Supposedly he has less than 2 hours left:

An adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Saddam would be executed before 6 a.m. Saturday, or 10 p.m. Friday EST.

Addendum - I expect also that announcement of Saddam's execution will come only after the act is an accomplished fact.

Timber is one of the few conservatives who actually has the ability to think criitically and well, I might add. We usually don't agree but at least he can be reasoned with.
