the BBC reports :
Pyjama ban for UAE civil servants
---------------------------------------
The Gulf emirate of Ras al-Khaimah has introduced a new dress code targeted in part at people wearing pyjamas to work.
The head of the emirate's personnel department was quoted as saying that large numbers of civil servants were wearing sleeping clothes and pyjamas.
Starting on 1 January 2007, civil servants in the emirate will have to wear national dress - a long white robe for men and the black abaya for women.
Expatriates will be required to wear suits and ties.
Dr Ma'ath Al Mutawa'a, head of personnel for Ras al-Khaimah's government, said workers' attire should reflect the progress being made in the emirate.
He said imposing a dress code on employees was aimed at improving services in the emirate.
Ras al-Khaimah is in the north of the United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf.
It has recently launched a drive to catch up with the wealthier emirates Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
