Hey, HB cartoons weren't exactly Clutch Cargo. Which I loved too, by the way.

They were one step up, granted, but when you were a kid in the era pre-cable, you didn't exactly have a lot of choices when it came to cartoons.

I grew up watching Cartoon Network, I'm new (and hip).

I'd watch all of those cartoons and I'd enjoy most of them a lot. I voted for Scooby because I had a crush on Velma (and IMO they couldn't have picked a better Velma in Linda Cardellini for the movie).

But if I could I'd also vote for Flintstones, Jetsons and Tom & Jerry.

I just voted for Top Cat and DO NOT understand why it wasn't a smash hit in the US.

In Mexico there's a sort of Top Cat cult.

Top Cat was COOOOOOOOOOOL.

Letty and Ray never got to see Top Cat, poor things!

Here, on posh bookstores, they sell the Deluxe Top Cat collection.

I don't know what were the Cat's accents in English. In Spanish, Top Cat (Don Gato) spoke standard Mexican Spanish, Cucho (Choo-Choo) spoke with a huge Yucatec (Southeastern) accent, Panza (Fancy Fancy) spoke with a low class Mexico City accent, Espanto (Spook) sounded kind of dumb, Demóstenes (The Brain) tattered and Benito Bodoque (Benny the Ball) sounded like a tender little kid.
Benito Bodoque is so popular, t-shirts with him wearing a pro-soccer team t-shirt are now fashionable among teenage girls.

Pixie spoke with a Mexico City accent, Dixie had a Cuban accent and Mr. Jinx an Andalusian accent.

Snugglepuss had a sort of Argentinian accent.

I, too, was born during the Truman Administration, and loved Warner Bros. 'toons. For the sake of discussion, though, Top Cat was my fave H-B production. He was kind of a schemer a la Sgt Bilko, if memory serves.

Razz

El senor don gato was a cat
on a high red roof don gato sat
he was there to read a letter
meow, meow, meow
where the reading light was better
m,m,m
t'was a love note for don gato
i adore you wrote the lady cat
she was fluffy white and nice and fat
there was not a sweeter kitty
m,m,m
in the Country or the city
m,m,m
And she said she'd wed don gato
Well don gato jumped so happily
he fell off the roof and broke his knee
broke his ribs and all his whiskers
m,m,m
and his little solarplexes
m,m,m
was this the ending for don gato?

All the doctors came upon the run
just to see if something could be done
and they held a consultation
m,m,m
about how to save their patient
m,m,m
how to save senior don gato

As the funeral passed the market square
the smell of fish was in the air
But in spite of ev'rything they tried.
Poor Senor Don Gato up and died.
O it wasn't very merry, Meow, Meow Meow.
Going to the cemetery, Meow, Meow Meow.
For the ending of Don Gato

When the funeral passed the market square
Such a smell of fish was in the air,
Though his burial was slated, meow meow meow
He became reanimated, meow..
He came back to life, Don Gato.

Now you do.

I'm am so pleased Top Cat has the top polling numbers here.

Here the gang:

I was about thirteen when it was on TV. For those that didn't see it, think Sgt. Bilko wearing a cat costume. The thing was it was on at NIGHT, a cartoon on night-time tv, wow. Our whole family watched Top Cat and it was the first time I remember thinking -hey, this is funny to me and funny to grownups too. Maybe I am grown-up.

I loved Tom and Jerry. I liked the rest too, especially Top Cat. But, Top Cat wasn't on much when I was watching tv.

Top Cat got my vote. It reminds me of some of the "lower class" guys I grew up with. But my all-time favorite is Bugs Bunny.

Nick Fun's post reminds me of another cultural difference of kids subject to the same programming (or perhaps I assume things about the US).

In the US, Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse are the most popular WB and Disney characters.
In Latin America it is Daffy Duck and Donald Duck.

Is it a duck fixation? A loser fixation? That we love angry cartoon characters?

Wow! C.J. and dj. I love Mr. Magoo.

fbaezer, sorry to get your thread derailed, but there was someone on A2K whose screen name was Allan Swann, and he helped me locate my favorite song from that cartoon.

When you're alone, alone in the world
When you're alone in the world
Blown-away leaves get blown in the world
Swirled-away leaves get swirled

And hand in each hand was made for the world
Where is the hand to reach for mine back
Where are the shoes that click to my clack
I'm all alone in the world.

The last cartoon I watched was King of the Hill.

Millions of grains of sand in the world
Why such a lonely beach?

A hand for each hand was planned for the world Why don't my fingers reach? Millions of grains of sand in the world Why's mine a lonely beach?

Where are the heels to click to my clack? Where is the voice to answer mine back? I'm all alone in the WOOOOORLD!!!

ehBeth: did you have Flintstone figurines as a kid? I think they came with packages of Jello -- they were only a couple of inches high. (I might be mis-remembering; maybe we just ate a lot of jello...it could have been Shirriff brand.) We collected them in my neighbourhood and played "Bedrock" all summer long, building houses out of plasticine.
