This could become a big story. It would be nice to see organized crime wiped out completely.

.
More than 90 people were arrested, including the man police consider the former Mafia godfather of Canada, in a huge raid Wednesday morning that rounded up several suspected organized crime figures.
.
Nicolo Rizzuto, 82, was among the suspects arrested in the raid, Montreal Police said.

More than 700 police officers fanned across Laval and Montreal North early Wednesday morning, armed with search warrants for dozens of homes and businesses.
.
They expect to lay more than 1,300 charges on the 90 suspects, including attempted murder, drug dealing, gangsterism, extortion, bookmaking and possession of restricted weapons.
.
Nicolo Rizzuto is the father of reputed Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto, who was deported to the United States to face racketeering charges in connection with the 1981 murders of three high-ranked New York mobsters from the Bonnano crime family.

Canada must be the only place outside of Europe where the old traditional Mafia still has any clout whatever. There is, as far as I can tell, no such a thing in the US any more. It's not all due to FBI vigilance, either. The old-style Sicilian-dominated crime organization couldn't handle the competition from the South and Central American cartels and was slowly phasing out most of its illegal activities when the law finally mopped up most of what was left. The only really "organized" crime we still have now is all drug cartels, none of them Mafia-dominated.

The Mafia in the US is not what it used to be, but it is still a formidable force. The Hell's Angels get all the headlines and the Mafia loves it.
..............................
The Sicilian Mafia's power in the United States peaked in the mid-20th century, until a series of FBI investigations in the 1970s and 1980s reduced the Mafia's influence. Despite its decline, the Mafia continues to be the most dominant criminal organization operating in the U.S. and uses this status to maintain control over much of both Chicago's and New York City's organized criminal activity.

I hope these arrests make a dent in things.

That gang's still got quite a grip on things. They're generally quite good at flying under the radar.

The evidence from my neighbourhood is that there is still a Teamsters/Mafia connection. The bikers have their hand in a few industries through their Teamsters connection - the movie industry in Canada is a case in point. The Teamsters bring in the bikers to provide 'security'. Not a choice. The choice.
