I don't think size has anything to do with it...

May I help you? Can I assist you? Interchangeable, but... we use the word "Help" more frequently, perhaps.

How may I help you?

Can you help me?

Help! Help! Police!

Give her a helping hand...

Helping others feels good...

etc.

I'm not very succinct tonight, sorry. Someone else will come along to explain it better, I'm sure. Glad to have tried to help you, though Smile

Help often implies a little more desperation than assist, also

I got assisted by my friends = doesn't make sense to me at least

I got helped by my friends= sort of make sense to me

so yea.. if the first one is like 'I got assistance from my friends', then it makes much more sense, doesn't it?

Well, it's very common to hear a clerk ask, And how may I assist you?

She came to his assistance. She was ably assisted by St. Francis of Assisi. Assisting St. Francis was St. Patrick, formerly of Ireland.

She came to his aid.

Thanks for your assistance. Thanks for your help.

Help is more commonly used.

"Help" is a simpler word. "Assist" has the meaning of "help" and a number of subtle connotations as well.

Yes they are. Assist is used in bigger events because if you are like at a hotel and you help the chef then you would be called chef's assistant. But if you were at a party and you helped the barman/woman then you would be called a helper.
