We missed International Migrants Day ...

well sorta ... it's today ... at least in this time zone.

Living in the Shadows: the human rights of migrants (Amnesty International)

or maybe it was yesterday (seems to depend on which website you look at)

On Migrants Day, UN calls on States to ratify treaty protecting their rights

18 December 2006: International Migration Day... workpermit.com

Quote:
As of the beginning of this year, at least 191 million people are living and working in a country not of their origin. One person of every 35 in the world is a migrant or an immigrant.

Quote:
If all immigrants and migrants combined belonged to the same country, it would have the fifth largest population on the planet.

Quote:
The country that attracts the most people from abroad is the United States, with 35 million, followed by Russia and Germany on 13.3 and 7.3 million people respectively. China sees the most people leave, followed by India and the Philippines. About half of all migrants are bound for North America and Europe.

Estimates vary as to how much money migrants send home, but what is not in dispute is that the amounts involved are huge and extremely important to developing economies. According to the International Labour Organization, the money sent back to developing countries is at least $160 billion, but is likely to be much higher. Not all remittances are recorded.

In November, the World Bank estimated that the figure for 2006 could be $199 billion sent home to developing countries, with $268 billion sent home to all countries by immigrants worldwide.

This money is often greater than the amount developing countries receive in aid. The skills and education that migrants and immigrants bring back to their home countries often exceed all the goodwill humanitarian efforts dedicated by other nations.

Is there an Italian version of the Goethe Institute?

I'd look there if I wanted a version of Amahl in any language.

Hi all, clicked this morn and had a busy day.

Merry Andrew, now that is a good story - better knowing it's true. With Cadet Stiles as your room-mate - your room-mate would be a brick short of a load. Very Happy

Oh, ul. My friend in Vienna has an eagle brick for me that is dated 1942 - my birth year. I was going to trade bricks with him - Atlanta, Texas
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/4835/atlbricksct2.jpg
See one of the brick styles has letters reversed - I don't know why they did that. Now, with Patti's health, I may just mail the bricks in a box with return postage on it for my Vienna brick........ Shocked

Hi Stradee, I'll look for the opera - but, my German isn't good enough to actually talk with a human being. Crying or Very sad

HooRay for Int'l Migrants Day........... Very Happy

It just occurred to me - Idea - if the opera isn't too long you could download it and change the language using Windows.

Big smiles to all of you who are helping me to find that CD.
This opera was written for an American TV station.Performed on stage in German, but no recordings. But I went to the opera today and I might get a privat DVD from the last performance.
First smile.

We managed to raise enough money to pay a full year for one of the girls from Oaxaca,
Second smile.

ehBeth, thanks for the links. A good reminder.
The children's museum here has a special show to this topic. Link in German
