College Application #1: Launched!

My house has been a place of stress and strain over the past few weeks.
Nigel has been composing his essays for college applications. Though a
good writer, he's something of a perfectionist. He starts, he stops, he
reviews, he corrects. And in between he strums something on the guitar,
he surfs the 'net, he watches a little TV. This off-and-on style drives his
mother right up the wall. And what drives her even further up the wall is
that it doesn't seem to bother me as much. Add to that, his older sister
went through the process with only a minimum of nagging. Harry Potter
fans will not be surprized that I call her "Hermione."

But -- Te Deum Laudamus -- he's done! The "common application" is
complete. The essays are submitted (for early action to his top choice
school which requires a second essay and only permits single early
action). Peace in the house.

I'm looking forward to a calm, quiet evening. Nah, I think I'll get on his
case about the state of his room.

Yay! How many more applications does he have to go?

He's got six schools on his list, so one down, five to go.
But the rest will be comparatively easy since he already has the common
application done.
It'll be easier on us too, since all the financial data is assembled.
(With the added benefit that we now know how truly unprepared for the
future we are.)

Good luck to Nigel on gaining admission to his top choice via early decision and best wishes to George and the Lovely Bride for surviving the next four and a half years.

Yeah, he wants to stay in the Northeast.
His choices include schools in Cambridge, Medford, and Chestnut Hill.
Out-of-state he's looking at Connecticut and Montreal.

I will. I just wish I could hold on to my hair, gray or otherwise.

Well, actually it's early action (non-binding) rather than early decision
(binding).

We'll all be waiting with fingers crossed. (One of the greatest tests of a
parent's self-control is not opening mail from the school to the kiddo.)

Oh man, I bet.

Reading with interest, will have to go through this ourselves at some point. E.G. will likely still be a professor and one major perk of professordom is free or reduced tuition for offspring at that University, but given the contrariness of adolescence I wouldn't be surprised if sozlet would turn up her nose at that and choose to go someplace else. We're not sure how we'll handle that. (Probably some variation of letting her go where she wants to go while we watch the dollar bills take wing. E.G. almost got a position at the University of Chicago -- there they not only offer free tuition to offspring but cover the cost ANYWHERE, up to the cost of an education at the University of Chicago, which is considerable. <wistful sigh>)

Nigel got a call from a local alumna setting up an interview.
Fingers crossed!

George--

Give us a time so we can all worry for you while you worry for him.

Gonna be at 5:30.

I told him to make a dry-run to the place as soon as he gets home from
school so that he won't take a wrong turn and be late this evening. I was
going to give him a lot of other advice, but I thought it would just have
made him more nervous. So I didn't. It took some effort of will.

George--

In youth we value stiff upper lips. In maturity, the closed mouth is a sign of wisdom.

You're talking 5:30 EST? I'll start concentrating about 4:45 to allow for travel time.

Hold your dominion.

Hang in there!

Thanks, JPB and eoe!

I'm not quite as nerve-wracked as I first was.
He would really like to get into this school, but all of his choices are good
and I'm reasonably sure he'll be accepted by at least one of them.

What I'm afraid of is that he may feel he has to do as well as his older
sister who got accepted by her top three. I'm trying to keep his
expectations realistic without squelching his willingness to aim high.
