Does anyone know about Forteo and jaw death. I saw a specialist for a problem with TMJ and he said that I have to be careful of injuries to my mouth since that could result in bacteria entering into the wound and then I would end up with jaw death. Also that I can never have any teeth extracted for the same reason. He said there is no stopping it, reversing it or slowing it down once it starts. The TMJ specialist also said that Fosamax and Forteo both cause bone death. Previously I had been on Fosamax for four years - at the end of that time the bone density test showed that my bones were in worse shape than they were before going on it. I was told that I was not a candidate for any treatment other than Forteo. So I have been on that for about 14 months now. Any information would be much appreciated.
Many of these cases of "dissolving jaws" have been detected either by dentists in some of their patients, or by oncologists treating female cancer patients, who also were on the Fosamax medication.

Welcome to A2K.
Since my complete hysterectomy twenty-five years ago, I've taken Fosamax. When the research first appeared about Jaw Death, I checked the statistics and figured my chances of breaking a bone were greater than my chances of a rotting jawbone.
My OB/GYN agreed.
Hope you're both correct.
