Movies move and move us. We go into the dark and wait and watch and sometimes the magic haqppens, laugh, lump in the throat, anger..so be it.

Anybody see Dirty Pretty Things? I did, and I thought that it was a wonderful film.

Cavfancier, while Depp carried most of the heavy water in Pirates, if indeed there was any heavy water to be carried, I think Jeffrey Rush as Barbossa, the the evil and accursed pirate captain, was also great. I enjoyed every minute of his performance. I took the whole thing to be a straight forward piece of heavily adorned fluff. It was an enjoyable afternoon.

The movie also added a few new maneuvers for to delight aficionados of the cinematic sword fight.

As a little something extra, I had the fun of listening to my grandsons enthuse about whole thing over pizza.

You seem to all feel you've been "taken for a ride" but enjoyed it! Laughing

Geoffrey Rush has become one of filmdom's finest actors -- he bowled me over in "Quills," then in "Lantana."

Ooh, I loved Geoffrey Rush in Quills. I have loved him in all the movies I have seen with him actually. I haven't seen 'Pirates of the Carribean' myself, but I can wait until it shows on digital cable. Wink

I think "Pirates" is the one with the lasting power as far as the summer blockbusters but I'd bet the DVD is released before Christmas which likely means cable thereabouts.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" is just like the ride at Disneyland -- with the added dimension of Depp, Rush, and Orland Bloom was great as the sometimes reluctant romantic hero. The swordfight in the blacksmith shop at the beginning of the film was great fun.

Speaking of Geoffrey Rush, I just watched The Banger Sisters. How did that cast get involved in such a turkey of a movie! (In my opinion). Good idea, bad script in my opinion.

That was one of the worst films of that year -- it would be a chick flick that you'd want to take a boyfriend to you'd want to lose. Someone should notify the gals at "Sex In the City" as they seemed to have trouble with the dumping thing (both sexes!) However, "Gigli" seems to have taken over the spot that "The Banger Sisters" left vacant.

I dig a good or "good bad" chick flick, like any chick, but "Bangers" doesn't rate at all. Just plain old bad. It's good to get your validation on that, Light!

I was embarressed watching Goldie Hawn. Remember when Demi Moore's (nobody) mother posed nude, because Demi did? I felt like Goldie had to play a groupie cause her daughter played one. Some weird dynamic going on here.

Did anyone see 'Fat Girl'? I found it quite compelling....also, the original French title "To My Sister" puts a whole other spin on the movie...badly translated, that title.

Yes, fealola, the motivation to make "The Banger Sisters" is indeed misdirected and at the same time rather obvious.

Oh, another one to rent now that I rejoined NetFlix to catch up on what I can't find on Sundance and IFC -- although Starz now plays some art and foreign films fairly regularly. I'd rather pay the $19.95 per month and follow the critic's choices and little gems like "Fat Girl" which I missed.
Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks, mac11.

The review: Dumb and fat.
The Director, specifically, and France, in general, were attacked for The Fat Girl. Laughing

Ebert's review:

http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/ebert_reviews/2001/11/112301.html

I never know whether to trust user reviews -- they are generally written poorly and often make dumb and fat statements.

"Passionada" and "Thirteen" seem to be the two to seek out at your local art house cinema.

I'm going to look for it at my local Edwards in South Coast Plaza or the Lido Theater in Newport.
