My hubby is finally building the arbor I've been begging for for three-plus years. It's looking really good too. I'll post pictures when it's done. Very Happy

lawn just got the first cut of the year - feels good to see the neat job i did ! Very Happy
since we lost a stately blue spruce last fall - about 35 feet tall - , we've decided to replace it with some weigelia bushes to cover the empty spot - still have three tall spruce trees and three maples on our property , but do miss the "fallen" one .

By the way, we're getting two folks from Oz here to visit us in June, Dadpad.

No rain here yet, but maybe some showers on Monday they say.

MsO, thanks, I hope I get to dig my own garden someday, too!

Soz, the garden looks good all season long (well, 2-3 seasons. It's amazing. The bulbs die back as other plants flesh out. I'll try to take pictures periodically.

I can count on my primulas to
usher in the gardening season
with a flourish of color.

Lilacs, daylilies, peonies, and impatienses will give a succession
of color as well as a foliage texture later. (That's the
intent, anyway)

Beautiful! The garden here got its first layer of mulch ever! I'm so glad I was able to convince the landlady. And, though she was reluctant to go that route, she really likes the results. I think that she'll continue to like it.

we got some much needed rain last night. About an inch and a half in an hour and a half (give or take). We hadnt had any rain for almost 2 weeks and I was worried about new plantings that I would have had to drive to reach with a watering tank.

Were trying some lavendar bushes and crepemyrtle. Im pretty ok with do's and donts on the crepe myrtle but weve always had poor luck with lavendars.

Is acid soil a big problem? Our sopil isnt real acid but its below neutral at about pH 6.5

I bought a bugle plant yesterday thinking it would compliment the ajuga that I have under my peach tree and when I googled it I found that it's just another name for ajuga also known as Lamiaceae. so it goes.

we've never tested our soil . the "garden show host" - who was the head-gardener at the governow-genral's residence in ottawa - recommends using limestone application for eastern ontario gardens - unless acid-loving plants have been planted .
so i usually follow his suggestion : use half the recommended fertilizer and make up with ground limestone - works well in our very heavy soil .
if i go down more than about 1 1/2 feet i hit deadpan - might as well be rock !

Balloons
Eight balloons swooshed over my home this morning - beautiful. My miniature roses are blooming in my front yard. The white climbing roses are blooming like crazy on the back yard trellis I had installed on top of my cement block wall (fence) and are beautiful---except they don't have any scent. My Chinese Magnolia blooms are gone. My purple sage and yellow broom are in massive bloom. Dolly and Madison's little poops are fertilizing the ground.

My garden is looking pretty dismal, because I have stopped planting new vegetation for fear they'll all be dead by the time I return from my absence. During my last time away from home, my bamboo plant died from lack of water. I'm surprised my sego pine and bonsai pine is still alive. My two rose plants seems to have survived too, but the flowers were already past its prime.

Doesn't your wife water the plants, cicerone, resp. don't you have a
sprinkler system?

Beautiful roses, dys. I'm surprised they like the rough climate there.
