True, Thomas, as long as those using the ignore button don't fill up the thread with "I'm ignoring you" responses that are simply that much more pollution for those without such a tool. I love the concept and I'm glad that OE has given folks an ignore button, but I hope those who use it to ignore someone actually ignore that person (or respond on point).

You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Then who the hell else are you talkin' to? You talkin' to me? Well I'm the only one here.

There's no 'ignore' button for this one.

After some soul searching, I've decided I will put the entire a2k membership on ignore, except of course myself. Sometimes I'm not certain about myself.

The Ignore-Button

For all of you who are using Mozilla Firefox or another Mozilla browser to A2K: there's an extension which allows you to hide specific user's posts! It adds an [X] next to the username:

http://i14.tinypic.com/2d7vx48.gif

By clicking the [X], you add that poster to your personal ignore-list. If a user is hidden, you will merely see his username and a link to display the post, but all his posts will be hidden:

Remove a poster from the userlist by simply clicking the [X] next to his username again.

The official extension can be downloaded from the Firefox Add-ons website. However, the extension you'll find there only works with Firefox 0.9 - 1.0+

If your version of Firefox is 1.5.x, you can download a compatible extention at http://thumper.kicks-ass.org/wordpress/phpbbuserhide/. You may need to right click > save as, then file > open file in your Firefox.

OE, do you have any idea if there's a way to customize that to different users on the same puter?

I don't want to cut Setanta off from seeing the folks who entertain him so mightily - but I don't wanna see 'em.

hmmmmm I suppose if I 'disappear' them in Firefox, he could still A2K through IE and they'd still be here.

On a related matter... what is with the recent influx of radio-talk-show style of poster here? Any ideas? Is this simply a random wave, some consequence of the election, or is there some networked "America is crumbling! For god's sake, get on bulletin boards and yell!"?

I'm here using Mozilla, and i don't see an ignore function. Believe me, i would use it with a vengeance, if only i knew how to do so.

Current version of the extension doesn't support that, but you could always create several profiles in Firefox. Everything you have customized in Firefox - Bookmarks, Extensions, Themes, etc. - is stored in a profile. Firefox creates a default profile on installation, but you can create new profiles any time you want to.

Here's the short version of how to do that (assuming you're using Windows):

  • Make sure all instances of Firefox are closed.
  • Select Start ยป Run from the Windows Start menu.
  • Type the following command and click OK: firefox -profilemanager
  • In the resulting Profile Manager window, click the Create Profile button.
  • Click the Next button in the profile creation wizard.
  • In the second step of the wizard, provide a name for the new profile and click the Finish button.
  • Back in the Profile Manager, select your new profile from the list on the right and click the Start Firefox button. Do not use the "Don't ask at startup" checkbox in the Profile Manager. By using this checkbox, any instance of Firefox you run on your computer will make use of the selected profile.

Now, upon starting Firefox, you can simply select your profile, and you'll find everything the way you left it. It's really a nice way if several users are using Firefox to surf the web.

The downside is that with a new profile, you'll have to re-install all the extensions. And you'll "loose" your bookmarks, at least in your new profile. (Of course you can still go back and use the original "default" profile.)

(There's a possibility to install the function as a Greasemonkey Script rather than as an extension. The advantage would be that it would most likely work with Firefox 2.0 and that you could turn it on and off while surfing. Still looking at it, though, so if anybody has suggestions.....)

I am here with Mozilla also, and I can't find it, either.

Thanks OE. I'll work on that.

Blatham - I'm curious about a set of three new posters who seem to appear and disappear together. I really miss the memberlist.

Me too. I wondered if the thread title "who lost iraq" might have shown up on google but if it does, it is after pages and pages and pages that come up on the phrase (clearly an idea seething about).

I've often wondered whether the linked-up rightwing activist groups have a "get on bulletin boards" strategy (Just Wonders, for example). Hacking foxfyre's email would provide an indication.

Or maybe it's just that more and more folks arrive on line and that so many of them are Americans who listen to Rush/Fox/Falwell and are alight with fear that Satan's big scary dick is near.

One of them, MC, is bright and could turn out to be a lot of fun. The other two are merely uneducated nuisances (assuming we are speaking of the same three).

Okay, found something. This should work in Firefox 2.0+ too, but I haven't checked this so far (timber...?)

This is how it works:

  • Install the Greasemonkey extension from the Firefox add-ons website.
(Greasemonkey allows to customize websites via scripts - more info on Wikipedia)
  • Restart your Firefox. You should see a little monkey in the bottom right corner of your browser....!
  • Now you can install a script to hide specific posters, for example by clicking this link. That's it!

Lots of nice scripts to customize a phpbb forum website can be found at userscripts.org.
AND now you can turn off all the customizations by simply clicking on the monkey to deactivate the scripts.

Brilliant.

I just set up Firefox 2+ - which is already proving to be a gem - will go after the greasemonkey once I've finished ordering some tickets online.

Seems to work - hadda fuss a bit to get it to install & function, but that likely just had to do with the overall software environment on machine I was using, rather than anythig to do per se with GreaseMonkey (which I've liked and played with for a long time) or that script.
Frankly, though, just scrolling, or better yet, simply reacting to idiocy in a rational, intelligent, adult manner (including, where appropriate, ignoring/dismissing), strikes me as a more efficient way to go.
