Re: When Animals Attack - Copycat Crime

Bertakis was apparently trying to remove
the spotted eagle ray from the boat when he was stung, police Cmdr. Mike Oh said. The ray was approximately 3 feet across and 18 to 24 inches long, Oh said. Officials have kept the dead ray in case doctors need to examine it, Oh said.
Surgeons were able to remove some of the barb, and Bertakis, who also suffered a collapsed lung, underwent surgery late Wednesday and early Thursday, the Miami Herald reported on its web site.
Ellen Pikitch, a professor of marine biology and fisheries at the University of Miami, who has been studying stingrays for decades, said they are generally docile.
"Something like this is really, really extraordinarily rare," she said. "Even when they are under duress, they don't usually attack."
That seems to suggest
that the victim wud have been better off
if he 'd allowed the animal to die
before removing him from the boat.
I am usually merciful to animals,
but this makes u wonder about the wisdom thereof.
A couple of years ago,
I came across a turtle standing on double yellow lines
between lanes of traffic. I saw that his shell had been
broken on top; apparently he had been run over.
I stopped, parked, and lifted him up by the back of his shell.
He had a very long neck, maybe 9 inches.
He tried to bite my hands, but I had grabbed his shell
too far back for him to reach; he just snapped n snapped.
I carried him over to the side of the road
and left him in a wet irrigation ditch bordering a wet field.
He wuda bit me if he cuda.

I petted a shark
in the Aquarium of New Orleans
in July of 2005. He was not impressed.

I suspect word has gotten out among stingrays that it's OK to kill people. It seems those animals have no regard for human life at all! They're as bad as George W Bush!

Leave it to a lawyer to consider the natural instincts of a wild animal as a crime. The tongue in cheek (hopefully) reference to copycat notwithstanding.
