Has anyone here had experience with Aricept, in mild to moderate Alheimer's, either themselves, or in someone else, ?
Was it helpful?
Were there side effects?
Do you know of any study showing that Aricept is NOT helpful in mild to moderate Alzheimer's?
As I understand it, Aricept doesn't "cure" Alzheimers, but it slows the rate of mental decline.
Mr. Noddy has been taking Aricept for four years now. His memory and judgement are failing, but I don't know how badly off we'd be if he weren't taking Aricept.
tomkitten :
just saw your earlier entry ; i am truly sorry to read about husband's poor state of health !
i found several entries about the medication you mentioned - perhaps you are already familiar with it .
i hope you don't mind me giving you a link to it .

...ARICEPT...
There seems to be a difference of opinion as to whether Alzheimer drugs are beneficial when the person has slipped into the moderate phase of the illness. My mother did not take Aricept, but was taking two other Alzheimer medications. The psychiatrist was adamant that the drugs were containing her level of functioning. Despite that, there was a gradual slippage in her abilities.
When she changed doctors, the new physician believed that the Alzheimer meds were useless in moderate stage Alzheimers', and took my mom off the meds a number of months ago. Honestly, the cognitive slippage appears to be going along at no faster a rate when she was on the meds.
From what I have read and heard, apparently meds like Aricept are useful in the early stages of Alzheimers'.
Aricept in Alzheimer's cases
Thanks, Hamburger. Actually, I've been checking several sites with information about Aricept, and I do have fairly strong reservations about it. I suspect my husband has gone beyond where it might help him.
