What do you consider to be the best books on grammar or style? I'm open to essay collections on writing, but really I'm looking for the stale, academic, textbook types with all of the basic and advanced rules concerning english grammar. I'm about ready to go through a thick Holt handbook, but I was wondering if there were better alternatives.
I have quite a few upstairs. I'll be back later with a few names.
Strunk and White's Elements of Style is still the gold standard.
And a few of my books on grammar are in a box in the car, having spent six months in a friend's truck. But I don't think I'll come up with anything all so different. I picked up an old Handbook of English that reminds me of my high school text, which would be a near antique if I still had it. I'd look at that in a pinch.
I'd look at (is it?) Strunk and White, a small book in paperback. I'd have an AP Style book handy, but I say that and have never actually checked mine.
I'd check to see what Roberta on a2k has had to say in the past on any grammar subject.
I'd suggest reading the New Yorker for language usage.
Grammar in business letters and grammar in literature can be two different animals: context matters.
Osso, take my Africa quiz.
How can I do that, oh Gus?
<looks to the east, some mountains in the way..>
Go to the thread.
(Do I have to walk people throught these things?)
Yeah, go there osso!!! Gustav wants to find out if anyone can go past
20 points. So far no one has beat him and his 11 pointers.
What, I have to do a search? Do I have to do this all by myself, she mumbles, while thinking maybe it's some recent thread.
No, just cheat a little bit
