yes they do stand like that...girls on one side, boys on the other, facing each other.

This is just their starting position though.

There's a person that's the "caller" and he/she leads them in the dance.

Usually with the phrase, "Bow to your partners" where the boys bow and the girls curtsy to their partner.

Where are you from? I ask since square dancing came to America from Europe, lots of different version.

below are square dancing costumes...the women where full skirts because they twirl around a lot, making the skirt fan out.

Frank--

Welcome to A2K.

There are some forms of folk dancing--such as the John Paul Jones and other play party games--where the men stand in a row across from their partners in the women's row. The head couple starts the dance figure, moving down between the rows of dancers, and then becomes the 'bottom' couple. Any number of comples can dance.

In square dancing each of the four couples makes one side of a square.

Square dancing is one form of folk dancing.

Good one Noddy.

Frank, below is a link to a video, about 3 minutes long, of people square dancing.

It looks like they didn't have enough men, so some one the women dressed like men, or else the women just danced with each other. It's all just for fun.

Don't worry that you can't understand what the caller is saying, I couldn't understand most of it either. Sometimes I'd pick up calls like "promondade to your left" "do-sey-do" which is the callers instructions of what he wants the dancers to do.

As you can see, if the caller doesn't know what he's doing, he'd have everyone just all mixed up.

Hope you can view this video....let us know.
