Student block smell like elephant houses on the continent as well - although most here look similar to shoe cartons.

so.... as an American, if I come to this thread and say that I'm pissed does that mean that I'm angry, inebriated, or both?

Well JPB-

In England we like to have objective criteria for deciding what "pissed" means.

You couldn't have typed that post as neatly as you did if you were pissed by my standards for example.

Therefore-

It's a sober question.

And,as such, not worth piss-balling about with.

JPB, in the UK,

pissed = drunk, it can mean the actual physical act of pissing as well.

Rat arsed = Drunk

Bladdered - ditto.

Tiddly = slightly drunk.

There are a few more terms, which will no doubt appear in later posts.

Pissed off is pissed off...it isn't pissed.

The word pissed, used on it's own (as the questioner put it) usually means drunk.

Mathos, like all Northern blokes, you could be placed in a room on your own and start an argument.

Mathos, owd son, read the question again, and see where JPB was referring to the PHRASE "pissed off". I believe she asked about the usage of the WORD "pissed". Take your time, and get back to me. Ay oop lad, thar's no roosh.

but, but, but... what if I'm all of the above?

spendi, if the fact that I still know I need to repeatedly use the backspace button has merit, then I guess I need to go pour another. On the other hand, there's something to be said for not getting so blotto that one doesn't have a clue to what they're talking about.

It's been a rough day....

One wouldn't think so Mathos seeing as how what a good little boy you are and rushing to Ms smorgs' rescue when her pilot light blew out in case she had to experience the cool October evening like her forbears did before us men got our heads together and fixed it so that her every physical comfort was catered for.

She has had men smelling of putty watching her knickers dry, as well they might, assuming they are not innured to such sights, and they have had to undergo rigourous training and some discipline in order for this scenario to come to pass and those who, for one reason or another, haven't helped in this important matter are only able to read about.

I think she should have rewarded them in the time honoured manner which wouldn't have took all that long under the circumstances as given.

Good night for the present.

OK, finally, I'll respond.............:-

Goodnight Mathos, but before you have those few words with me, just read back and see how many times you've tried to instigate the old "North and South" insults argument, eh? (see above quotes).

Addressing me in such a belittling way, would be the equivalent of me referring to you, not by name, but as an "Arrogant Northerner" for example, or "Mancunian tosser", and I would never dream of doing such a thing, unless it was a "heat of the moment" comeback, due to severe provocation. Had I provoked you when you made the above belittling remarks?

No.

I have come to believe that this persistent belittling manner that you have regarding Southerners, especially Cockneys, may come from some form of chip on your shoulder. Envy, perhaps? (although you'd never admit to it), or is it something else? Who knows? But the chip definitely seems to be there, as you DO persist with the comments.

The very first time I respond to this sniping, ie this latest one, you appear to get all indignant.

Now...to help you overcome your problem, what I would advise is this.....
Please try and make a real effort to appreciate where you were born and raised. There is no reason to be ashamed of your heritage. You do not need to somehow "balance the books" by bringing down those of us who live in the South.
Other northerners here seem to have no problem in expressing their pride, without feeling the need to constantly belittle. We're not THAT different to you, here "darn sarf" y'know, and certainly do not deserve to be the constant butt for the purpose of deflecting your envy/perceived inferiortiy problem. Try to believe me when I say that you are as good as us who live down South, Mathos, so there is no need for all this repetitious "put down" malarkey.

It's OK on rare occasions, when there is a bit of bantering going on, but it gets me worried about you when you keep acting like a broken record.

If and when you make the old "Southern softy/pompous Cockney" type of remark in future, I promise I won't respond, as it will not help you in your efforts to overcome your whole "chip" thing.
Rest assured though, I will be reading and then giving a sad little shrug, sincerely hoping that you get over this soon.
Please, by all means "vent" in response to this post. It may well do you good, and may even speed your recovery.

Or even better...go and take out your frustrations, by doing some of your kick boxing on a punchbag or something.

Sleep well, Mathos.....and don't worry. You're a Northerner...BE PROUD ......you ARE equal to the those of us who hail from the South!

Well, most of us, anyway.

Bloody Hell!

I can't leave this thread for ONE night (to get pissed)...

Mathos, say sorry to Ellpus

Ellpus, say sorry to Mathos

suspendy - say sorry to everyone

JPB, say sorry for starting it

suspendy, say extra big sorry to smorgs for suggesting she is nesh, and for suggesting that I would EVER show my knickers (collectively on a radiator - or flashed) to the hired help - purleez, I have some standards!

Flirting is an art, one has to be subtle, you have have to adjust the flirt technique to take into account geography, the social standing of the recipient and whether they/you are pissed or not!

COME ON!

We are all from the same Sceptered Isle (apart from the Welsh - everyone knows they are rude bastards), we invented The Spitfire, the computer, won two world wars, home to Mrs Miniver, we have Coronation Street AND Eastenders (forget about My Family - that's always been a **** sitcom - loathed by The North and The South)...

<smorgs>

Anyone want a brew?

x
