She's my kinda girl, Muckty...

No scrimping on the slap!

PS: I think I've got a gas leak - just wanted to share, I'm now going to attempt to contact British Gas (unless it's changed to Acme Utility Services).

I'll have to get dressed to light my fag - due to 'naked flame' thing...

So if you don't hear from me - I've been blown up!

Be very careful with gas smorgsi, it is not a toy.

Turn off at meter and don't mess with anything until engineer has been. Good idea to open a window or two, don't use light switches even and DON'T smoke.

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

No? Well I'll go to the foot of our stairs!

...and I always thought it was.

Mathos, sweetie, may I remind you that I am rather grown up, and have a 'Mum head'.

What about using the PC?

Seriously though, thanks for your advice/concern, just phoned it through, the woman went through a well rehearsed list of do's and don'ts in a 'sing-songy' voice for me.

She told me 'not to enter the celler of the property'. I said 'don't worry, I won't, cellers are well scary!'

PC should be ok not likely to generate a spark from the keyboard! Mobile phones are a different kettle of fish, they generate a spark (not visible to human eye) each time you press a button, hence they are outlawed on petrol forecourts.

I know your grown up smorgsi, (well sometimes you act like you are) but I have seen a few effects from explosions in my day and body parts, sinews, veins, guts, blood, bits of lungs etc look rather messy on the walls and they're bloody hard work to remove.

Maybe its because theres a major police station near Lords and the Oval. conversly maybe there is no police/fire/ambulance station near Old Trafford or Headingley or Trent Bridge.

Paddington Green police station (of terrorist detention fame) isn't far from Lords. There are also fire and ambulance stations nearby. I used to live about 1/2 mile from the stadium but never went - shows how interested in cricket I am!

Lords and the Oval are also located by major routes in North/South central London, which are used for the emergency services to get between incidents - not really the case with other grounds you mention, which are outside the city centre, if I remember the coverage on TV.

Gas have just been and turned the boiler off and put a seal on it and a 'Dangerous Appliance' notice on it!

That's FANTASTIC!

No heating or hot water and a seven year old.

Apparently it's reading high levels of carbon monoxide and could have killed me in my bed! (I sleep in the room next to the boiler).

Anyone know what my rights are (as far as fixing goes), I have a private Landlord.

I'm fed up now...

Can I come round to yours for a bath, if I bring my own towels?

Thank you so much, Ellpus!

I have read it...

I've come to Eunuchs to photocopy the report, now I'm on my way to post it in the Landlords letterbox - with a letter.

I just know if it's a big job he'll give us notice.

The boiler went before and he just sent round a bloke to 'sort it'. I doubt if he was Corgi registered.

The gasman said I have to get a 'certificate'???

That's just great - homeless for Christmas.

Get the Environmental Health Officer onto it, if you're worried. As far as him evicting you, I would get some legal advice, pronto. I think it may be the other way round...you could get something out of him because of his negligence.

He won't evict - he will give us notice.

He did not renew the six month contract - so he's entitled...

We have to give a month - he has to give two months.

I think he wants to sell anyway.

Bugger!

If this cpmforts you, smorgs:

one of the two flats below ours has been sold.
Now, since six weeks, the new owner is renewing it - with a steamhammer, it seems, but only after he returns from work.
And on weekends.

And to add to my bad luck: since Thursday last week, they (= profesionals) are re-installing the central heating and the water pipes plus building a totally new bathroom. Additionally to what the new owner does!

So, we've got at least 14 h/d the steamhammers, and during the day no central heating and water!

(Mrs. Walter's trip to Essex/Hertfordshire/Middelsex and surrounding hamlets doesn't comfort me a lot  )

Sarah, the original CONTRACT said you have to give a month, he has to give two.
As the contract has expired.....that doesn't apply any more, and the situation may be that you now have a lot more in the way of rights than you think. Basically, he has been accepting rent payments without a contract being in place. This could complicate things a lot for him.

You need to get specialist advice, IMO. I've PM'd a possible link.

LE is correct (for once) you do have many rights as a tenant.

He is meant to have all gas appliances, serviced and tested and a certificate of operational safety issued every 12 months by an approved CORGI registered gas engineer, regarding gas appliances.

Electricity also requires a certificate.

No contract and no agreement of tenure! He has the problems.

Yeah as the sitting tenant, with a grievance, you could refuse to move.
But you might get kneecapped.

I wouldn't want to raise the ladies' hopes by using the phrase "sitting tenant", as I think that the most recent amendment to the tenancy law has virtually put paid to that.

The landlord is definitely batting on a sticky wicket though, what with having a tenant paying him rent but no contract to fall back on, whilst blatantly failing to ensure that the house was safe, by allowing a faulty boiler to fill the place with CO2.
A lawyer specialising in tenancy matters would have a field day.

I just heard on the BBC News that if we carry on consuming at our present rate (it didn't mention accelerating) we "will need a new planet in 50 years."

I have no idea whether it is true or not and as I won't be here in 50 years I'm not much bothered but it does make one feel a twinge of pity for the kids one sees being wheeled around in push-chairs if it is true or even nearly true. 80 years would catch most of them I think.

And I don't suppose it will be sudden like one day we don't need a new planet and the next day we do. I would expect a fair bit of grumbling to take place as a prelude.

Does anybody know if it is true or not because if people thought it was they might start liquidating their assets and having a big blow-out as their children won't need them anymore.

Stay warm.

Well- it was the British Broadcasting Corporation, the voice you can trust I have been brought up to believe, and you can't get more British than the British Broadcating Corporation everybody always said and seeing as how this is a British thread what could be more appropriate than a statement from the latest up-to-the-minure British hot news which implies that having babies in 2006 will require the little darlings, instead of ordering their conservatories, canapes and ringing up the emergency gas services, to hot-foot it to a launching pad in Chorlton-come Wedlock and, the blue touch-paper having been touched, to hope for the best.

I love feminism. It is the funniest thing I have ever seen in my entire life.
